Chicken and Dumplings Recipe and Wine Pairing
These hearty and comforting dumplings have both sweet and savory flavors along with fresh herbal characteristics. Several wines come to mind. But for this we’re focusing on aromatic wines (that have both sweet and spicy characteristics) to balance out the savory and herbal flavors and compliment the sweet vegetables. We chose Gewürztraminer for it’s match with the herbal components of the dish and Riesling to lighten up and balance out any richness in the dish.
Gewürztraminer: Lucien Albrecht Gewürztraminer Reserve ~$20
From Alsace, France, this aromatic Gewürztraminer is both floral and fruity with apple, exotic lychee, and spice. Juicy, with just a hint of sweetness, this will really balance out the richness of the dumplings and match the herbal notes well.
Gewürztraminer: Hogue Cellars Gewürztraminer ~$10
For a great value priced Gewürztraminer turn to this one from Washington State with typical spicy, floral, and sweet fruit aromas. Soft and rich with more sweet fruit coming out in the mouth, this is another that will hold up to the richness of the broth and dumplings.
Riesling: Joh. Jos. Prum Riesling Kabinett ~$25
From the Mosel region of Germany comes this beautifully aromatic Riesling with a fragrant mix of fruity apple, lime, and apricot that balance out the mineraly and stoney notes. These aromas lead to a wine rich on the palate with a crisp, zesty, and mouthwatering finish. If you’re looking for something elegant and complex to drink while you indulge in the chicken and dumplings, this wine is for you.
Riesling: Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr. Loosen Eroica Riesling ~$20
This always popular wine from Washington State shows some sweet citrus, grapefruit, lime, and apple aromas. The slight sweetness on the palate is balanced out by the vibrant crisp acidity and minerality. The fruit notes, acidity, and clean minerality is an overall good bet for the flavors and textures of the chicken and dumplings.
Riesling: Ravines Wine Cellars Dry Riesling $16
From the Finger Lakes Region of New York comes this excellent example from Ravines Wine Cellars. Beautiful mix of floral, fruity, and citrus aromas lead to a wine with minerals and herbs with a lush texture and dry, clean, crisp finish. The lively acidity and balance of flavors will be a remarkably fresh choice for the dish.
