Summer is coming and so often those lazy days call for pitchers of sangria and plates of simple tapas.

One of the beauties of sangria is that it is easily made, without any strict recipes (just like lazy summer days). I also love that it can be made pitchers at a time to serve a crowd in a relaxed way.

As forgiving as sangria can be, it is always good to have a guideline sangria recipe until you are comfortable mixing on your own. This one from my friend Beth is a perfect one to get you started.

Beth's Sangria Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 bottle red wine (Rioja, Syrah or Sangiovese work especially well)
  • 1 cup of simple syrup (boil 1 cup of water with 1 cup of sugar to make this)
  • ¼ - ½ cup Triple Sec, Grand Marnier, or brandy, or a combination of all three
  • 10 or so ounces of tonic water or club soda
  • 1 or 2 Tablespoons orange juice, sweet tea, or pineapple juice
  • Slices of fruit (oranges, apples, grapes, pineapples, raspberries)
Instructions
  1. Combine all the ingredients.
  2. Pour into glasses.
  3. Garnish with extra fruit.
  4. Toast and enjoy!
Notes
Some recipes suggest you should let the sangria rest with the fruit to infuse the flavors, but the simple syrup makes that not as necessary in this recipe.

White Sangria

If you’d prefer a white sangria, just substitute a bottle of white Albarino, white Rioja, Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc for the red wine.

Do you have a special ingredient that you add to your sangria? If so, please share it with us in the comments.
