Wine and Chocolate Pairing

All too often I enjoy a square (or four) of Dove dark chocolate with a glass (or two) of red wine.

On vacation in Boston earlier this month, I saw a wine and chocolate pairing on the menu at The Last Hurrah in the Omni Hotel and was surprised to see chocolates paired with white wines as well as reds. Of course I had to give it a try!

I ordered the Frisk “Prickly” Dessert Riesling with Santander 53% cocoa semi-dark chocolate.

The menu instructed me to take three breaths before tasting so that I would be ‘in the moment.’  I’m not sure if it was the breathing, the wine or the chocolate, but it worked and I really enjoyed it! I was amazed at how the two really complemented each other.

Since then, I’ve been wondering about pairing chocolates with white wines as well as reds. I found the Tifo Chocolate site, which gives tips for pairing and also has a pairing chart so make it even easier. I’m hoping to try a few more soon.

What about you… What wines do you like to pair with chocolate? And which chocolates do you enjoy?

In my newlywed days I hung out with young married with kids. Their favorite? A glass of Cab with M&Ms! (They had a ready stash of M&Ms as rewards for their kids’ potty training efforts! LOL)

Yum! I’m going to have to give that a try, too!
