Messina Hof Winery made a grand showing at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Auction again this year, garnering $105,000 for a nine liter bottle of their Messina Hof Solera 2004, winner of the Top Texas Wine at the international wine competition affiliated with the rodeo. Messina Hof was the most awarded winery at the competition this year.

In the past nine years of participation, Messina Hof has won more than 100 awards and the wines have raised more than $500,000 for the HLSR.

Paul Bonarrigo, winemaker and co-founder of Messina Hof Winery & Resort, and an advocate for Texas wine, shares his top 5 wines to enjoy, based on each of the following categories.

Paul’s Top 5 Wines to Enjoy

One white wine under $20 and widely available in the US

  • Messina Hof Riesling, 2011, Texas:

(Disclosure: I make this wine!)

The perfect wine for spring! Think fresh crisp granny apples, sweet bee-seducing honey suckle, and juicy ripe pears. This Riesling will cool you off from the Texas heat.

One red wine under $20 and widely available in the US

  • ┬áMessina Hof Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2010, Texas

(Disclosure: I make this wine!)

The grape used to make this wine pursues and incorporates wonderful chocolate aromas, unique to Texas wines.

One splurge (whatever splurge might mean to you)

  • Messina Hof Solera Texas Sherry, 2004

(Disclosure: I make this wine!)

Liquid Cinnabon! Barrels of Solera Sherry are baked in the Texas sun to fully develop these flavors.

Two others of your own choosing

  • ┬áKE Cellars Cabernet, 2008

The high tannin content in this wine provides structure and intrigue. I love KE Cellars Cabernet with a hearty (red) pasta!

  • La Bodega Chardonnay Reserve, Texas

The light-crisp taste has ripe flavors of melon and peach. La Bodega Chardonnay is especially delicious with any grilled fish- my favorite is salmon!
