Hi, I’m Amy, and I’m here to help you discover the right wines for you every time you reach for a new bottle or glass.
I started drinking wine in 1994, but it wasn’t until 2011 that I realized I wanted a simple tool to help me discover wines by flavor profile, so I could always be sure to enjoy the wines I ordered or bought.
I found tasting notes talking about gooseberry and other things I hadn’t tasted. But I couldn’t find anything to guide me regarding flavor that was easy to understand and follow.
It seemed most of the coverage of wines and wineries was about their stories (which are important) and their scores or medals (which can help to determine if a wine is well-made or if it is a great representation of a region or grape variety). But very little centered on what the wine actually tasted like.
When choosing wines, it seemed to me then (and still does today) that flavor should play a significant role.
If you don’t like how a wine tastes, what else matters when choosing something to drink?
I started thinking about it seriously, and it seemed to me that with the right data, recommendations could be automated in some way. And so I decided to solve that problem for myself (and anyone else who was with me) by building a flavor-based recommendation engine for wine. Except I couldn’t find a solid source of flavor data about wines anywhere.
So I got to work.
I consulted with sensory scientists, winemakers, globally recognized wine educators, and an applied mathematician to determine how to collect accurate perceived flavor data and how best to use it.
After developing a method and collecting the initial flavor data, I built a learning recommendation engine to share recommendations.
The problem there was that we don’t have just one preference in wine. Sometimes we want something lighter, or sweeter, or bolder. And I wanted a system that reflected that.
So I kept working.
After years of listening and iterating, this evolved into a filtering system where anyone could indicate what flavor profile they wanted in a wine right then and instantly be shown a list of wines that most closely matched that profile.
Wine sellers have used this current version in the US and Europe since 2015 to help people select the right glass or bottle of wine quickly and easily at special events, wine shops, and winery websites.
The system was built so each instance could have its own database of wines from which to draw.
The database I am sharing here on Wine4.Me showcases wines I have come across and want to share with you for various reasons. You’ll find many of their stories on the site.
I am also sharing things here that I’ve learned through the years about enjoying, storing, and serving wines as well as a few stories about people I have enjoyed meeting and experiences that have wowed me…
I hope you enjoy them all.
It is my hope that Wine4.Me will help you to find new wines to enjoy, wineries to support and inspire you in some way in your own wine adventure.
P.S. Should you be interested in learning more about the commercial application of this tool for your winery, restaurant, wine shop, or special event, please visit VineSleuth.com. I can create a customized database of your offerings, allowing your guests and shoppers to find the best matches for their needs among your wines.
I would love to work with you!
